Lonely Place

Description
This poster was inspired by the poem 'To the Fig tree on 9th and Christian' by Ross Gay. In particular this poster highlights the opening phrase: "Tumbling through the city in my mind without once looking up the racket in the lugwork probably rehearsing some stupid thing I said or did some crime or other the city they say is a lonely place."
Process
Starting from a more literal side, I wanted to include some direct callback to the poem itself without it being implicitly stated. Therefore, the color palette was sampled off of a cut open fig. While the entire poem paints a different story, I wanted to visualize the sentence quoted in particular. It's ironic that in a bustling city we can be around so many people at once yet feel so alone. We assume everyone we pass by is living that perfect life that we see on TV and begin to compare ourselves. "I wish my family was still together." "I wish I had that much money." "I wish I was that successful." Eventually, no matter how good our life is in actuality, it begins to feel like a shell in comparison to our assumptions of others.
